What Does Nm Mean on a Valve Actuator?

Oct 12, 2026 | Controls | 0 comments

Nm (Newton Metres) is the unit used to measure torque — the rotational force an actuator produces to operate a valve.

In HVAC and Building Management Systems (BMS), selecting the correct actuator torque is essential for reliable valve operation.

Why Is Torque Important?

  • Correct Operation – Ensures the actuator can reliably open and close the valve.
  • Avoids Undersizing – Insufficient torque may prevent the valve from fully opening or closing.
  • Protects Equipment – Choosing the right actuator helps reduce unnecessary mechanical stress.
  • Reliable BMS Control – Supports accurate heating and cooling system operation.

Example:

An actuator rated at 10Nm can produce 10 Newton metres of rotational torque.

Important: A higher Nm rating does not automatically mean a better actuator. Always match the actuator torque to the valve manufacturer’s requirements.

Technical note

For rotary valve actuators, torque is measured in Nm. However, many linear valve actuators are rated in force (Newtons, N) rather than torque (Nm).
This distinction is important when selecting actuators for different types of HVAC valves.

What Does VA Mean on a Transformer?

VA (Volt-Amperes) measures a transformer's apparent power capacity. It tells you how much electrical load a transformer can safely supply. VA = Volts X Amps For example, a 24V transformer rated at 100VA can supply approximately 4.17A at 24V. Choosing the correct VA...
