What Does VA Mean on a Transformer?

Oct 12, 2026 | Controls | 0 comments

VA (Volt-Amperes) measures a transformer’s apparent power capacity. It tells you how much electrical load a transformer can safely supply.

VA = Volts X Amps

For example, a 24V transformer rated at 100VA can supply approximately 4.17A at 24V.

Choosing the correct VA rating is essential when powering BMS and HVAC equipment, including controllers, actuators, relays and sensors.

  • Calculate the total connected load.
  • Allow suitable spare capacity.
  • Check transformer ratings and manufacturer specifications.
  • Avoid overloading your transformer.
